Pilates

Pilates is a method of body conditioning for the overall structure of the body. It will increase joint stability and bring awareness in movement. Inspired by the natural grace and flexibility of infants and cats, Joseph H. Pilates first developed these efficient movement patterns to restore his own strength and balance after childhood illnesses. His innovative technique employs spring resistance and gravity to train the body to release tension and direct strength from the core muscles of the abdomen, pelvis, and back. In respect to the body’s design, muscles are strengthened as a complex network rather than isolated pieces as in traditional weight training. The result is a longer sleek line in musculature, improved coordination, balance, and flexibility.

Meet the Staff

Marisa Petraglia Marisa Petraglia – Classical Pilates Instructor

Background:
Marisa has been teaching classical Pilates for 6 years. She is a Power Pilates certified teacher with thousands of hours of teaching experience.

After extensive study and training, she obtained her Power Pilates certification in 2003. Marisa teaches beginner through advanced lessons on the mat and apparatus. Continuing education includes: 2004: Creative Choreography (mat and apparatus), Mat on the Reformer, Comprehensive Apparatus Certification, Tower, Challenge Clients with Beginner System, Teaching Pilates for All Ages; 2005: Anatomy, Beyond Anatomy, The Enchanted Wunda Chair, and Common Injuries to the Spine and Hip: Causes, Prevention and Treatment; 2006: Art of Verbal Cueing, Wunda Chair; 2007: Tactile Cues, Be Balanced! Matwork Teaching Tips & Tools, Reformer Retreat, The Shoulder Girdle and Pelvic Girdle: Their Relationships to the Integrated Whole Body Pilates Workout, Breathing: The Third Guiding Principle of Joseph Pilates; 2009: Strong Advanced Mat Class, Basics of Anatomy and Ultimate Core Warm-up and Workout.

Marisa has expanded her Pilates career by specializing in rehab for diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Osteoporosis and Breast Cancer. X-rays of osteoporosis patients indicate Pilates can halt, and in many cases reverse this disease. There are movement patterns that can make Osteoporosis better or much worse and Pilates can help.

The Pink Ribbon Program
Until recently, many women have never received rehab for breast cancer. The Pink Ribbon Program is a nonprofit organization, designed in 1998 by physiologist and Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist Doreen Puglisi. In 2010 Marisa received her certification to use Pilates in this rehab program for all surgeries associated with breast cancer.

Just a few benefits you will receive from this program are:
* Regained strength and mobility in affected arm and shoulder
* Retrained musculature of the trunk for postural and overall mobility improvement.

The Pink Ribbon Program at the Fitness Club for Women
All breast cancer patients will work within a 30-minute program (discounted to $30 per session) for the first 8 weeks. At least one session a week is recommended, although you can expect better results from twice a week. After 8 weeks we will re-evaluate your body and create a new plan for success.

How She Teaches:
While the full Pilates repertoire offers 500 exercises, Marisa’s extensive background allows her to carefully choose exercises for individuals that will meet their needs. She approaches Pilates lessons as rehab through exercise and believes in educating people about their bodies through movement. A client should take what they’ve learned in their lesson and be able to incorporate it in their daily routine. You’ll begin to see changes when you drive. Suddenly you’ll need to straighten your seat upright and wonder how you ever drove with it so low before. These small changes are indications your posture is changing.

Your Pilates lessons are like small journeys, accessing muscles that have never been touched and then figuring out what to do with them. When you work from the inside out, it’s a much different kind of strength.

When She Teaches:
Marisa teaches a pilates mat class (free with a membership) every Wednesday at 8:15 a.m.

Apparatus lessons are available by appointment for both private and semi-private lessons on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
